The Power of Smiling

May 19, 2010

Today I ran into an old acquaintance.  I haven’t seen her for about a year.  As always, she greeted me with a beautiful smile.  She has one of those smiles that makes you never forget her face.  And she always smiles.

About ten years ago, she had a stroke.  She was off work for a long time.  When she came back, the only lingering effect of the stroke was short-term memory loss.  She fully recovered and moved on with her life, still smiling.

I learned today she had finished her last round of chemotherapy for breast cancer.  She smiled and said she’s just waiting for her strength to come back.  She had a mastectomy, but she’s healed from it.  She feels fine.  She also said she met a man named Jesus.  I couldn’t help smiling about that.   I told her He’s a good man to meet.

All the time we were talking, she was looking directly into my eyes and smiling broadly.  Yes, she does have a special smile.  Everyone who meets her knows that.  But that smile has helped her make a lot of friends and get through a lot of difficulties.  It is one powerful smile.

Yes, Peggy, smiles leave an indelible memory on ones mind. I remember yours thru the 30+ years since we have seen each other. And your laugh! Played any euchre lately? BZZZT! Youve run into a buzzsaw. Hope you reply, I would like to talk to you. If you dont, have a great life! KLR

Oh, I remember! How could I forget? No, haven’t played a lot of euchre lately, but have made sure every niece is a whiz. They don’t get the signals, though.
