My Little Shop of Horrors

October 31, 2010

I don’t know what species of palm tree this is, but it grows really fast.  I have had it only five years.  I bought it at Target for about ten dollars, and it was about ten or twelve inches tall.  I repotted it immediately and it took off like a rocket.  It really is not one tree.  It started as two small clumps, and new clumps have sprouted and grown.  Some of the clumps have died, but new ones appear.  Right now it is in bud.  It’s blooming!

Years ago, I was reading a book about houseplants.  It said palm trees do not bloom indoors; virtually never, and that it was not worth the effort to attempt to force blooming.  It did not say how to force blooming.  But this is not the first time one of my palm trees bloomed.  I had one blooming in the early 1980s.  My houseplant book notwithstanding, many photos of blooming palm trees are posted on websites.

I may try to propagate the seeds later when they ripen.  I hope I can determine this species some day.  It was marked when I bought it, but I had no idea this plant was going to turn into such a monster and I threw the tag away.  I hope you enjoy the video.

    Wonderful!!!
Have been googling and searching, trying to find out what these things growing from my palm are. They are unique and, like you said everyone said that palms don’t bloom.
My palm was bought at Wal-mart like 5 years ago in a 4 inch pot. It’s now in a 12 inch pot and has the blooms that look just like yours……and it’s January. I keep my living room at 68-69 degrees. Water about once every two weeks. Feed it miracle gro maybe once a month.
I bought two orchids at Lowe’s hardware on clearance for a dollar about two months ago. They are growing new shoots off the sides, no flowers. They are in my bathroom where it’s humid. I know nothing about orchids. We shall see what happens with those.
Thanks for the video of the palm blooms. This proves that ” They Do Exist”!
